As many of you may already know, the 7.0 Mw earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010 has left a large part of the country in ruins. The earthquake has affected more than 3 million people, and killed an estimated 100 000 to 200 000 people. Due to the nature of damage to the overall infrastructure of the capital; including hospitals, transportation facilities and communications, the UN has been quoted in saying that this is the “worst disaster” they have ever had to deal with.
In the short aftermath countries have responded quickly, providing aid, supplies, food and water, and personnel for security and assistance in searching for survivors. Numerous countries have pledged aid donations to assist in Haiti’s recovery. The UN has asked for a $560 million dollar appeal for relief efforts in Haiti. The Government of Canada has committed $135 million in aid.
You too can help out with the relief efforts in Haiti. YMCA Canada is now accepting donations for the YMCA of Haiti Emergency Appeal. All donations are tax-deductable, and will be matched by the Canadian government (if made before February 2, 2010).
